WSM Midwifery Philosophy of Care
Birth Works! Birth is a normal, unique, intensely physical and spiritual event. Confidence in this natural and successful process of recreating ourselves is essential in overcoming a medicalized focus of fearing birth.
Women have a right to know there is a safe, satisfying alternative to medical maternity care. Wind Song Midwifery (WSM) supports the right of women and families to choose their care.
WSM provides comprehensive, unbiased information regarding issues in maternity care. As furnishing resources for education is a primary focus of care, WSM maintains an ample lending library and reference list. With this information, a client can make truly informed decisions.
Except in a true emergency, clients are always involved in decisions concerning care. Women are encouraged to be full participants in all facets of any decision regarding the care of their pregnancy.
WSM offers personalized care for every mother-to-be and encourages each woman to identify her personal expectations.
WSM expects women to take an active role in their care. WSM care focuses on monitoring nutrition, physical condition and fetal development parameters.
HOMEBIRTH PERSPECTIVES
True risks with out-of-hospital birth are a rare occurrence. For well-nourished, healthy women, there are very few true "surprise" obstetric emergencies. The vast majority of problems have indicators that arise over time, which allows for a transfer to physician-based care.
Each woman must evaluate for herself, how the possibility of the rare incident and the possible need for medical techniques compares to the high probability of medical interventions interfering with a normal birth (possibly causing emergencies themselves).
Being pregnant and having babies is not risk-free, no matter what care a woman chooses. Rarely, babies (and even more rarely, mothers) are injured or die in birth, both in the hospital and at home. No health care provider can promise a "perfect" birth event.
"I try to remind mothers that saying yes to having a baby means you just grabbed hold of the tail of a comet. It is going to whisk you through the rest of life and contains many surprises - which won't always be kind."KatiAnn
I believe every healthy woman should be able to birth her baby where and with whom she feels safest. In a healthy pregnancy, this may be with a non-medicalized attendant (midwife) at home or other non-hospital site. If complications occur, then physician and hospital care can be the safest choice.
There are far more interventions (and complications from them - with higher costs) related to the medical model of health care.
Because infection (especially from antibiotic resistent organisms) is so high in hospital deliveries I have come to believe that no woman should ever have her baby in a hospital unless there are medical indications. Radical as this seems, I believe that the medical focus of many interventions plus the risk for postpartum infection makes hospital birth care a secondary option. I advise out-of hospital birthing for every healthy woman.
The latest look at world-wide health care puts the U.S. at 37. Of the top 10 countries rated for excellance in healthcare all of them use midwives as their primary maternity care providers. Physicians are called upon when there is "medical indication."
And guess what else - their cost of care is far lower than ours. Hmmmmmmm!
It is important to provide balanced care: nutritional education and guidance: thorough health monitoring and timely medical support when there are indicators that are outside of a "normal" condition.
Every mother is assisted to prepare for the special birth she desires.
