Special Report - July 14 Fun
Fly Results:
Four pilots participated in the fun fly events held on Thursday July 14. The weather was good with only light winds. Joe Bolden flew a “Four*40", Don Hart flew a “Mojo” profile fun fly, John Sawyer flew a “Not-For-Sale” fun fly named “Butt Ugly” and Dave Walker flew a “Bingo” low wing sport aerobatic plane.
There were four events: Climb-and-Glide, 3-Minute-Flight, 3-Loops/3-Rolls, and Spot-Landing. All events except the Spot-Landing were timed. Climb-and-Glide was won with the longest glide time, the 3-Minute-Flight with time closest to 3-minutes, and 3-Loops/3-Rolls with the shortest time from take-off to landing.
Climb-and-Glide allowed a 15-second motor run for the climb, followed by a timed “glide” at idle. Dave Walker had the best time at 1:51, followed by Don Hart with 1:28, Joe Bolden with 1:07.5 and John Sawyer with 1:05.
The 3-Minute-Flight was just that – no timing devices allowed. Pilots took off tried to fly for exactly 3 minutes and land. Time started when the wheels left the ground and stopped when the plane touched down. Dave Walker had the closest time with 2:33:5 (26.5 under), followed by Don Hart with 2:15:3 (44.5 under), John Sawyer with 3:53:5 (53.5 over) and Joe Bolden with 4:15 (1:15 over).
The 3-Loops/3-Rolls event involved take-off followed by three loops and three rolls in any order. Three pilots completed the event. Don Hart completed the task in 29 seconds followed by John Sawyer with 35 seconds and Dave Walker with 55 seconds. Unfortunately, Joe Bolden was taken out of the event by a mishap on landing.
The Spot-Landing event involved a take-off, flight to approach for landing with the touch-down closest to a tape stretched across the runway winning. Three pilots participated. Dave Walker won with a landing exactly on the tape followed by Don Hart at 5’4” and John Sawyer at 6’0”. Don Hart made a realistic simulation of a carrier landing when his tail wheel mount grabbed the tape, but that didn’t improve his measured touch-down distance from the original tape location.
Each event was scored with the winner getting 4 points, second getting 3 points and so on. Scores were added across all events to determine the overall winner. Dave Walker came out on top with 14 points followed by Don Hart with 13 points, John Sawyer with 8 points and Joe Bolden with 3 points.
The fun fly events were preceded and followed by open flying.
