Old Business
Mall Show Planning
Bruce Bumgarner
displayed the Park Zone Decathlon (with radio) purchased with the help of Wally Bigelow and Hodgins Drug. Wally offered an assembled version for display.Bertle Spence will check on publicity at the mall. Wally gave Dave Walker a contact at the Daily News for publicity and a possible story. Signs are up at the mall and Tri State.
We will need two marked raffle ticket boxes for the two drawings: 1) the Decathlon plane, and 2) the model building tools and supplies package. Raffle tickets can be dropped in either box. Tickets will be sold to the public 10 for $5 (members can purchase 12 for $5).
Byron Stevenson showed the 30 reusable laminated model identification cards (of a total of 50) he made. They are pre-numbered and will be marked with Dry Erase pens. Bryon will make ballots for "Peoples Choice" votes for their favorite planes.
Joe Bolden suggested making foamy gliders for the kids. He will demonstrate construction at the next meeting. We’ll need volunteers to build the gliders at the show.
Set up for the mall show is scheduled for 7pm Thursday, March 10. Start planning which planes you will bring for display.
Super Bowl Snowfly
The event was scheduled as a "cookies and chips" event based in John Sawyer’s shop the Saturday before Super Bowl. The club TV/VCR will be available for viewing model flying videos.
Super Bowl Funfly Event Report (by Don Hart)
The Super Bowl Funfly was held as scheduled Saturday February 5. Since the Puyallup Model Expo was the same weekend, some of the members who would usually be there were in Puyallup.
There was actually some snow, even enough to stick – a couple of times. The snow melted quickly. It was a bit too windy and cold for most attendees to consider flying. The wind sock was standing nearly straight out most of the time.
Tom Sandell, John Sawyer, Mel Colvin, Sam Hord, Don Hart, Dave and Polly Walker, and Ben Troka were there. There were plenty of snacks, coffee and cold drinks. Model and full-scale aviation videos were shown on the club TV/VCR.
There was a little flying. Ben Troka flew a helicopter outdoors, and attempts were made to fly an electric powered model inside John’s shop. The indoor flying was a bit hard on Ben’s IFO model. It was too fast and heavy for such a small area. Two flights were attempted, both ending with damage to a servo mount. Repairs were easily made.
There was plenty of "hangar flying". Tom brought his book of fighters, so we had good reference material.
Palouse Science Center
The Palouse Science Center has asked us to have a model display Saturday, February 26 from 10:30 to noon. Joe Bolden will be in charge of building planes for the kids. Materials are foam plastic plates and egg cartons. The club TV/VCR will be set up. Please bring model flying videos. Dave Walker and Mike Cook will provide laptops with flight simulators.
Flying Site Update
Dave Walker
explained that the Philips Farm flying site was offered in exchange for the one planned at the new park on Palouse River Drive south of Moscow. There was a lively discussion about the usability of the site and on the exchange of views with the flying site neighbor who objects to anyone flying models there. The County Parks Advisory Board is still in favor of our using the site for a flying field – their next meeting is in March.Concerns were raised about the configuration of the site and its unsuitability for training and for novice pilots. There is the possibility of losing sight of planes below the edge of hill, a possible fire hazard from LiPo batteries and the distraction of drivers on the highway.
Dave suggested we not give up the site until we have another, better place to fly.
Wally Bigelow shared a possible flying site location 7 miles south of Pullman near Chambers. It is on flat land. The owner may be willing to have a flying site there for use during limited hours. Wally and Dave will take a look at the location. Donation of an R/C trainer and an offer of compensation for crop damage may be helpful.
Club Dues
Club dues are $20 for individuals and $30 for family membership.
After much discussion, it was moved, seconded and passed to have the club pick up the club dues for the four students taking Joe Bolden’s flying model building classes.
New Business
Inventory of Club Property
We are doing an inventory of all club property of any description. Please let Colleen Bungarner have a description what you have by email.
Fuel Order
Wally Bigelow
announced that a new fuel order will be put together at the March meeting. Byron’s has a special Spring price. This time all orders will be paid in advance.Club Logo
Wally Bigelow
brought a new club logo design, a circle with a picture of a Sopwith Camel biplane, and the club name. Wally will check prices for shirts, hats, etc. with the new logo. AMA and local businesses will be checked.Field Maintenance
It was moved, seconded and passed to rent a roller for Sawyer field as needed through the flying season. The roller must be reserved ahead of when it is needed, possibly monthly. Treating the runway to discourage night crawlers will help keep it smooth.
Movin’ On
Nic Wittman
announced that he is planning to move to south-eastern Idaho in April.Meeting adjourned.
Demonstration
Bruce Bumgarner
showed the Park Zone Decathlon to be raffled at the mall show.John Sawyer brought his latest construction project, a 52 inch span Piper J-3 Cub with OS30 4-stroke. It has the classic Cub yellow color scheme.
Wally Bigelow brought a Great Planes Fokker DR-1 tri-plane. Nic Wittman built the plane for static display at Red Baron Cleaners in Spokane.
Many thanks to Colleen Bumgarner for her notes of the meeting.
