Flying Reports

The EAA event at the Lewiston airport was attended by a lot of spectators, including several PRRCF club members. There was both full scale and (a little) model flying and a demonstration of R/C model cars. The full scale flying events included flour bag bombing and spot landings. None of the bombing contestants came anywhere near the target.
The highlight of the event was when John Sawyer bought (at a VERY good price) two multicylinder model engines from the back of a pickup. The engines were a four cylinder opposed  OS FF-240 four stroke and a 5 cylinder radial OS FR-5300 four stroke. John has decided to build a SIG J-3 Cub for the OS FF-240, but has not decided what plane to build for the radial.

O.S. FF-320 4 Cylinder RC 4-Stroke OS FF-240                          O.S. FR-5300 5 Cylinder Ringed 4-Stroke Sirius  OS FR-5300

After the EAA event John Sawyer, Randy Sexton, Jerry Becker and Don Hart went to the Mann Lake (Lewiston club) model field to fly R/C.

Bob Boettcher reported that he and a firend went to Sawyer field to fly Bob's Slow Stick. Bob has also been flying the Slow Stick from his back yard in Pullman.

Dave Walker visited his son in Virginia. His son had soloed on a prior visit. Dave and his son flew a lot during this visit. Flying is possible from his son's deck.

Larry Bobisud has been flying his modified Slow Stick. Larry painted it black, installed ailerons and a brushless power system. He says it flies very well.

Les Grammer came in 6th at the NW Soaring Championship at Mission, B.C. Les said there were 36-40 pilots flying at a sod farm with views of the mountains. Aaron Borst from Canada won the event. Three juniors (14-15 years old) from the Seattle area flew. Two of the juniors qualified for the US team to the World Championship in Switzerland. Les was awarded the Cliff Mink trophy for model soaring. Les also took second place in points earned at NW soaring events  for the entire season. Congratulations Les!

Bryce Winterbottom, a new member, reported flying a CG Eaglet at Mountain View Park in Moscow. Unfortunately the receiver pack failed and the plane went crazy while he was showing his wife his flying skills. Bryce also tried hand launching a Delta Muppet, but had problems with the launch and broke 2 props.

Mel Colvin reported problems with his Park Zone Cub. A receiver problem caused servos to reverse, resulting in a crash. He sent the receiver in for repair and got a new receiver in return. The servo problems were resolved, but there was no throttle control.  Mel sent the plane back and got a whole new one in return.

Fall Picnic and Fun Fly

Windy conditions prevented any fun fly events. About 20 people attended, including Bill Robinson and Mike Marsh from the Lewiston Club. As usual, the burgers were awesome (thanks Dave) and there were a lot of other good things to eat.

Mike Marsh and Don Hart put in flights in spite of the wind. Harry Evans attemped a launch with his original design Fusion, but didn't get clear the runway. Damage prevented further attempts.

Mike Marsh ran the OS three cylinder radial engine on his Rascal 110 giant sport plane. He wasn't able to fly the Rascal , but the engine really sounded sweet and has LOTS of thrust.

The wind died down late in the day and Dave Walker, John Sawyer and Jerry Becker were able to put in some flights.

Field Report

Dave Walker
reported on his investigation of AMA liability insurance coverage. AMA members are covered "any time, any where" as long as AMA safety rules are observed. AMA liability insurance is secondary to home owners insurance if the pilot has that coverage.

Some club members are flying at the old Potlatch mill site. There was a discussion of the history of  our use of the site and the rules now in place.  Fixed wing planes should be flown south of the runway, observing the "no fly zones" over the city park, play fields and nearby houses. Let's use common sense and keep the noise level low.

Bob Boettcher suggested that large grassy area at the Nader Farm (just outside Pullman toward Palouse) would be good for small electrics.

Safety and Clean Up Reminder

Members are reminded to clean up when you fly! Also, announce takeoffs and landings when others are flying. Safety First!

New Business

 No new business.

Meeting adjourned.

Thanks to Colleen Bumgarner  for her meeting notes.

Demonstrations

Bruce Bumgarner showed his new Gremlin combat flying wing. Bruce covered the foam core wing with "Zagi tape", colored plastic tape used on Zagi flying wings. It's nearly ready to fly.

Jerry Becker showed his Hangar 9 ARF J-3 Cub. It is powered by a 46 size brushless motor rated at 800 watts. A Thunder Power 4S 4200 LiPoly pack provides "fuel". Flying weight is about 6.5 pounds. Dave Walker reported that he also has a H9 Cub.

A "best/worst crashes" DVD was shown.
