Flying Reports
Mark
Scarborough (new member) gave a demonstration of control line flying at Sawyer Field.
Jerry Becker,
Randy Sexton and
Don Hart reported flying several times. Don crashed his trainer at the Mann Lake field when the wing came off - old rubber bands.
Harry Evans
discussed the recent balloon launch to 90 thousand feet! Harry is
hoping for an RC plane launch from a balloon in the near future.
Old Business
Fall BBQ and
Fly In
About thirty people - families, friends and RC pilots - attended the
picnic. The weather was great. There was lots of flying. A great time
was had by all, including the Sawyer's dog Matilda (though Matty wasn't
feeling well by the end of the day due to all the burgers, hot dogs and
other snacks she consumed).
Walt Roselle (Lewiston Club member) flew his Nieuport 17 scale biplane.
Randy Sexton
towed a flag with his big Telemaster - very impressive, though it
didn't work quite as well as other times. The windy conditions during
the flight kept the flag from flying vertically.
Jerry Becker and
Don Hart
flew electric powered foamy planes in a combat demonstration. Jerry's
Zero (on a 3-cell Lipo pack) easily out-classed Don's Hellcat on a
2-cell Lipo pack. The match lasted several minutes, with several
near collisions. The Zero finally caught a piece of the Hellcat's
crepe paper streamer winning the match.
Many thanks to
Dave Walker for his skills as Chef.
Flying
Site Investigation
No new information available. Tabled until the November meeting.
Community
Involvement
Harry Evans volunteered to work with the Boy Scouts as liason for an
aviation merit badge project. Harry needs this for a school project, so all will benefit.
New Business
Buddy Box TrainingSam Hord
brought up that the club had voted to not allow buddy box training at
club events. The Fall Picnic was billed as an opportunity for current
and former members of the club to come out and take a turn on a buddy
box.
Jerry Becker was of the opinion that since there were no competition events scheduled at the picnic that buddy box flying was appropriate.
Further discussion also brought up the failure of the current
training program. Communication between trainer pilots and students has been lacking, providing few opportunities for students to get training.
Meeting adjourned.
Thanks to Colleen for her meeting notes.
Demonstrations
Jerry Becker showed his 27% Hangar 9 "
CAP232"
giant scale 80 inch span aerobatic plane. It is electric powered with a
2700 watt system turning a 20x10 APC prop, providing 170 watts/pound. A
5000mA 10S1P Lipoly pack provides the juice. The 2.4 gHz receiver and
digital servos are powered with a separate Lipoly pack with a voltage
regulator.
Don Hart showed his Byron "
Pipe Dream"
components. This is a project that is still under construction. Don had
the fuselage (a piece of one inch aluminum pipe) with wing mounting,
landing gear and engine mounting parts attached. The vertical
stabilizer and rudder are 1/4 balsa sheet with 1/64 ply skins. Wings
and horizontal tail and elevators are molded foam. Wing span will be 83
inches. Power will be a 35cc gas engine turning an 18x8 prop.
Program
Mel Colvin passed around pictures of Al Culver's completed RV-6 homebuilt plane. It had not been flown at that time.
Don Hart showed pictures of the Lewiston club Spring Fly-In.
Upcoming Events
Super Bowl Snowfly
ID
Saturday before Super Bowl. This is an annual event held at Sawyer Field on the Saturday before Super Bowl. Though we always hope for snow to fly from, the weather does not always cooperate. However, since this is a potluck
event, there is plenty of good food. Videos, demonstrations of engines
and models, as well as indoor and outdoor RC flying are possible
activities.
