Minutes accepted as amended. Dave Walker requested that the note about mixing brands of transmitters in a buddy box set up be amended. When the master TX is a Hitec, a Hitec buddy cord is needed to prevent damage to the slave transmitter (a Futaba buddy cord caused damage to a Futaba slave TX).
Treasury: $2375.09
NW Electric Fly-In is August 8-9 at the Paradise Rd field about 10 miles south of Spokane on US 195.
Mel Colvin related his experience flying in the B-17 "Sentimental Journey" at the Lewiston airport. His daughter and son-in-law bought him a $425 seat on the B-17 as a father's day gift. Six passengers can be taken up at a time. Veterans of WWII who had served in B-17s are given free rides at each location the B-17 visits. The B-17 had a crew of ten. Mel talked to the B-17crew and learned that each of the 18 cylinder engines has a tank for 37 galllons of oil. The ride was noisy and drafty, but great fun. Bob Boettcher reported that he and his wife Virginia got a ride in a B-17 at a reunion of his WWII unit. Bob was the pilot of a B-25 in Italy.
Don Hart reported that he won first place in the Lewiston IMAC basic class. He passed around the medallion award. The Palouse Flyers club donated $39 to cover the cost of the awards for the IMAC basic class. Don crashed his U-Can-Do 3D in a midair with Bob Buttenhof's electric plane after the event. Don's plane was totaled. Bob's plane lost its tail surfaces, but was repaired within a couple of days.Jerry Becker, Mike Marsh and Don Hart did some experimentation with balloon busting. Helium filled balloons were tethered with crepe paper. When the crepe paper was anchored to the runway with a weight, the wind caused the balloon to be forced down near the ground. This made popping the balloon with an RC plane very tough. When the crepe paper was anchored to the top of a piece of plastic pipe about 8 feet tall the wind caused the balloon to be blown nearly straight out from the pipe. This kept the balloon well above the runway. Chasing the balloon with an RC plane was much easier. However, the balloon was free to move around in the wind, making hitting the balloon a real challenge. A pole mounted balloon busting set up will be used at the July fly-in. There is some risk of damage to planes.
Don Hart reported that the Chuck Elliot Memorial Fly-In the Lewiston club hosted at the Mann Lake field was a success. Chuck's family, friends and several RC model pilots attended.
Jerry Becker reported that the Alpine Adventure soaring event at Joseph, Oregon was great fun, with about 20 pilots attending. Events included glider aerotow and slope soaring. Jerry decided not to attend the slope soaring event over Hells Canyon - his new Corvette was not the right vehicle for the primitive road to the flying site.
Mark Scarborough reported doing well in a recent CL pattern contest, winning 2nd in the advanced class and 1st in the profile class. Mark also attended his first RC pylon race and is hooked. He flew in the sport 500 class. He said it was a really exciting to fly a 120 mph Viper racer ten laps around the pylons after flying nothing faster than a 40 size Ugly Stick sport plane. He crashed after a heat, putting him out of the action. Mark was exhausted after the event, but he plans to continue to compete in pylon racing.
Potlatch Field Work Parties
John Sawyer reported that there was a great turnout to repair cracks in the runway at the old mill site near Potlatch. Larry Bobisud, Mel Colvin, Dave Walker, Randy Sexton and John used tar or a mix of sand and cement to fill cracks. Another work party was planned with emphasis on push brooms and leaf blowers. More work is needed to complete filling the cracks.
Summer Picnic and Fun Fly
The fun fly is scheduled for Saturday, July 18. Dave Walker volunteered to be the "burger and brats" chef for the picnic. The format will be potluck with lucky hand poker (a card awarded for each flight) for participating RC pilots. Balloon busting will be available for those brave souls willing to risk a plane. Two cards will be awarded for each balloon busted. The first prize is a ParkZone Ember RTF.
Don Hart showed pictures and short video clips of a 16 foot Telemaster flown 4th of July weekend from an alfalfa field near Grangeville, ID. Wheels were a problem on the 100 pound plane. Wheel barrow wheels from the local hardware met the need. The giant Telemaster flew well on its 3W 150cc twin engine turning a 32 inch prop. It is capable of mild aerobatics including loops, rolls and knife-edge flight. Two successful flights were made. Onboard video should be available soon.
Don also showed pictures of the B-17 at Lewiston airport and Mel getting his official flight certificate.
