Announcements

The Orrin Crooks Memorial glider meet is scheduled for May 8-9 at the Lewiston flying field.

The Lewiston club has scheduled their Memorial Fly In for Saturday May 22.

Flying/Building Reports

Sam and Gunnar Sorem went flying (without Gunnar's wing!) at Leroy Johnson's crop duster strip south of Pullman.

Simon Smith has been flying seven times since the last meeting. His son is also getting some air time. They are flying Cub foam park flyers. A crash destroyed the fuselage of one Cub.

Bob Buttenhof has been flying in the Grangeville area, including a maiden flight on his new original design Ellipse.  He has also been slope soaring on the old Whitebird grade and on the breaks of the Salmon River.

Don Hart flew the maiden flight of the Midwest Stearman PT-17 biplane he bought recently at an estate sale. It flies very well on a Saito 91 four stroke. It took about two pounds of lead shot on the motor mount to balance!

A J Dahlberg flew his LT 25 trainer from a wheat field. He is currently covering his Butterfly.

Old Business

Super Bowl Snow Fly Report

The Snow Fly was a success with both indoor and outdoor flying, but no snow. A total of 36 people attended! Several flyers from the Lewiston club came up. Both fixed wing and mini-helicopters were flown indoors in John Sawyer's shop. The helicopters had an impromptu balloon bust. For the most part, the balloons won. Several pilots flew outdoors, including Rob Smith flying his Funtana 125 with a Saito gas 4-stroke. The potluck featured a choice of chili recipes.

Mall Show Update

The new management of the Palouse Mall was willing to let us hold a mall show May 15-17 with 6 tables provided. It was decided that the dates and number of tables was unreasonable. A motion to have NO mall show this year was seconded and passed. Many thanks to Bertle Spence for his efforts.

Tax ID Update

Jerry Becker said the IRS has new rules for tax ID and that more investigation is needed. This item was tabled until the next meeting.

New Business

Reciprical Agreement

A suggestion was made at the Snow Fly to have an agreement to have members of the Lewis-Clark RC Model Club and the Palouse Region RC Flyers pay a small fee to fly at the other club's flying site. A motion to proceed was seconded and passed. Mark Scarborough will contact Dave Oglesbee, president of the Lewiston club to work out the details.

Program

Bob Buttenhof showed his Ellipse, his latest original design model. The Ellipse has a 62 inch span gull wing (to maximize space in the fuselage). Bob used an incidence meter to align each rib. Wing tips are laminated from 16 layers of 1/32 balsa. Covering is Monokote and with Monokote trim. Bob also used dry transfer decals. It is powered by an AXI 2826/10 drawing 40 amps with a Xoar 14x7 prop, giving 130 watts/pound. A larger prop will be installed to increase the horse power.  The model was test flown January 27.

Parker Sorem showed a new Blade CX dual rotor mini-helicopter.

Gunnar Sorem showed a new SE-5A WWI biplane. It is nearly ready to fly.

SE-5A

Elmer Carlson showed a foamy indoor biplane that is nearly ready to fly. The kit cost $23. It is very easy to repair.

Mark Scarborough showed his new "jet style" Avenger control line stunter. This new competition model was recently stripped and repainted. It is covered with silk span, painted with many coats of dope and has an automotive clear coat. It's a real beauty!
