Pullman The Palouse Ridge Runner Moscow
Palouse Region R/C Flyers Newsletter
============================== July 2010 ================================
The next club meeting will be at Jack-in-the-Box in Moscow (Moscow-Pullman Highway), Tuesday, July 6 (contact club President Mark Scarborough for information).
Members Present:
Minutes accepted as read.
Treasury: $2650.98
The Palouse Flyers Spring BBQ is scheduled for Saturday, June 19.
Kibby Dome indoor event is July 2-6.
Lewiston IMAC June 12-13.
Don Hart installed an electronic ignition conversion kit on his 27% CAP232. This was about a two hour project to remove the magneto components and install the electronic ignition parts. Removing the magneto flywheel was the only hard part. The conversion has increased power and made starting easier.
Elmer Carlson reported that his foamy was damaged while flying in his living room. Elmer has a Lazy Ace flying with an OS120 four-stroke. He built the plane in 1979Mark Scarborough flew at the control line meet in Eugene, getting maximum appearance points for his original design "Avenger".
Spring BBQ Planning
Mark Scarbourough will get a prize for the lucky hand poker at B&B in Spokane.
Tax ID Update
There was discussion about whether the club should incorporate as a nonprofit entity in Idaho. The fee is $30. There was no new information on whether this would require a tax filing. Bill Robinson, treasurer of the Lewiston club, says that the state sends a very short report form each year asking only for the names of club officers for the next year.
Parks and Rec Update
The club will buy three Slow Stick packages for the class so we can get a good price. Jerry Becker will look into whether a cheap ($50) 2.4gHz radio will be adequate.
Potlatch Field Update
The runway at the old mill site is looking good. Only minor repairs are required to fill the remaining cracks.
No new business.
Elmer Carlson showed his first radio control system, a Citizenship radio with linear servos. This is a digital proportional system made in the 1960's.
Mark Scarborough showed a cored foam wing as used in control line stunt planes. It is VERY light and strong. The leading edge sheeting is wrapped around the foam with no leading edge strip. Much of the foam core is removed, leaving two vertical foam "spars" to retain stiffness.
Mark also showed the large collection of propellers he uses to select the optimum prop for a particular control line plane. Props from the different vendors may have different airfoils and pitch even though they are marked as having the same diameter and pitch. Mark showed a guage he uses to check the pitch. He selects a prop for the optimum RPM to suit the engine and plane. There was a very interesting discussion of torque vs horse power and prop selection. Mark also discussed proper prop balancing, including redrilling to center the mounting hole.
