First let us look at Isaiah 9 verse 6 and 7. This is a scripture text that is much quoted at Christmas. "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this."
"For unto us a child is born." This of course is the Christmas story. Luke 2:1-7. I won't quote it. If you haven't read it for some time you might want to do that. This passage of Scripture gives us the reason for the whole thing. Luke2:14. "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men". Also note that in the tenth verse it says that this is for all people. Peace on earth, good will toward men, what a wonderful promise. That hasn't happened yet but it will.
"Unto us a son is given." Here is expressed in a few words God's method to make it all possible. Many Scriptures apply here. John 3:16, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." Most people, if they don't know any other Scripture, they know that one.
"The government shall be upon his shoulders." This is a promise, folks, of something that is yet to take place. The theme of the whole New Testament is the Kingdom. The Kingdom of God, the Kingdom of Heaven, these things are mentioned over and over. Jesus taught us to pray for it. Matt.6:10, "Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven." People have prayed for it for 2000 years. It will come.
"Upon the throne of David," the nation of Israel was special in God's eyes. When he led them out of Egypt he made a special arrangement with them. Ex.19:5 says " Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation". They failed and eventually they lost their nation. Zedekiah was the last king of Israel and this is what God said to him. Ezekiel 21:26-27. " Thus saith the Lord GOD; Remove the diadem, and take off the crown: this shall not be the same: exalt him that is low, and abase him that is high. I will overturn, overturn, overturn, it: and it shall be no more, until he comes whose right it is; and I will give it him". The one whose right it is is Jesus.
"Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end." This is a promise made by the Creator of the Universe. It will take place. There is a prophecy in the Old Testament that tells about this. Nebuchadnezzar the King of Babylon had a dream. In the dream he saw a statue of a man with a head of gold, chest of silver, belly of brass, legs of iron, and feet and toes of iron and clay. A stone was cut out of a mountain without hands and struck the statue on the feet and it came crashing down and the stone grew and covered the earth. Daniel interpreted the dream as a picture of the kingdoms of earth from Nebuchadnezzar and on down through time. Dan2:44 says "And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure." This is the kingdom we pray for. This is what Christ is coming the second time to do. This is the real meaning of Christmas.
"The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this." This will take place without the efforts of mankind, in fact, in spite of the efforts of mankind.
This whole story is in that one passage of Scripture. This is the basic outline of the plan of God for man. He does have a plan and it is working toward its completion. Merry Christmas all.
